THE Fiji Australia Business Council had called on the Australian government to immediately review its travel advisory to Fiji or accept that it is starting to look like a form of sanction. 4th January 2007

We received several inquiries from guests who like to come to Fiji. Media broadcasts say that Fiji is very dangerous right now.... But reality is different... let me explain.

Bula,

This is a opinion by a regular visitor to Fiji and has become like a concerned observer.

Every thing in your holiday in Fiji is safe. There is absolutely no civil unrest to cause any harm to anybody.

The day when coup happened, I went to Suva for holiday and even Suva central, every shops and offices were open and business was normal.
Rendezvous Beach Resort is located on touristy west side of Fiji also the sunny side of Fiji. Everything is normal the whole of Fiji is normal.

The only major significant difference was the presence of Military checkpoint's in the entry to towns and cities. But on March 2007, they cancelled all the check points.
Every time when something happens in Fiji, Australian media broadcasts widely to stop the tourists and businessmen coming to Fiji. That is very smart way to keep tourists their own country.

I met some Australians this year before the election. They said that Australian government advised them not to go to Fiji, but they came instead and nothing happened.

Many of them are surfers and they caught really good wave in Wilkes passage and had a great time overall in Fiji. They said to me if they believed that advice, they would have missed out on a very good trip.

This coup is to clean up the corruption by Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase. He was given enough time everybody in Fiji knew it.

The Three Contentious Bills that the Military and the people of Fiji are against are.

1. The Qoliqoli Bill or the "Fishing rights" bill.

This bill takes away the right of the state on all foreshore and sea to be given to the different coastal and Island landowning units. Therefore people have to pay to step on the foreshore, sea recreation scuba diving or surfing. This will create a war between coastal Fijian villagers and inland Fijians who are also Fijians but do not have excess to the coast. The citizens and tourist and Fiji will be restricted in their right to enjoy the sea.It will destroy the tourism industry in Fiji and Indigenous Fijians will go into civil war. Democracies like Australia New Zealand America will never allow such laws in their own countries.

Town is normal..

Party and concert is on.

Resort is normal.

Sugar cane harvesting is normal.

2. The Land Claim Tribunal Bill.

Indigenous Fijians already own 90% of all land in Fiji. The 10% is Freehold. Foreigners largely own this. So by tracing back ancestral Fijian and finding the people that settle there first and giving this land back to the Indigenous Fijians is the aim of this tribunal. First it's hard to find who was there first. Second those that develop freehold have developed it very well to a large extent. This is racist. It must also be taken to account that Indigenous Fijian land has not been developed only because they are lazy to develop it. So now they want to go and displace the people that have worked hard and invested huge amounts of money and time to develop their freehold land.

3. The Reconciliation and Tolerance Bill.

In this bill there is Amnesty clause to free those that took part in the 2000 coup many of them are members of the Laisenia Qarase led government. The Attorney General who is the political appointee of the Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase to make New Bills is also from his same village was a disbarred lawyer for misusing trust fund in his care and corruption becomes the prime minister legal adviser.

The public in Fiji already know this. They do not have to be told.

Most of the people say that we don't want coup but if keep doing this corruption, Fiji will be destroyed.
Media in Australia does not explain why military was against to Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase. Actually military wanted to solve this problem without making coup.
Their have voiced their concern since the 2000 coup and Laisenia Qarase was then appointed Interim Prime Minister by the Military commander to clean up.

Six years later the Military had to go in and do it by themselves.
